Hidden Pet Fences: What They Are and How Do They Work?
Dogs are born wanderers, not to mention easily distractible. No dog would intentionally run away from their home, but if they are chasing a squirrel or the scent of something extra special, they could accidentally wander too far and lose their way. Hidden or “invisible” fences are one of the most convenient and effective ways to keep your pet safely at home.
Why? For one they don’t require an expensive construction and are basically maintenance free. It’s aesthetically pleasing because it’s invisible but it also removes common problems with fences such as dogs digging, jumping or biting through.
So What is Hidden Pet Fence?
There are three main parts to every hidden pet fence: a receiver collar that the pet wears, an underground wire that borders your yard, and a radio signal transmitter that connects the two.
Rather than utilizing electrical energy, our underground wires broadcast a secure wireless FM radio signal throughout your entire yard. All invisible fences today use Digital Modulation technology to process their signals, but what sets Dogwatch® apart is that we are the only company using FM radio signals—an important distinction since AM radio signals aren’t as safe. With this precaution taken into consideration, it ensures that our collars will not malfunction due to interference or interruptions in the signal strength.
How Hidden Pet Fences are Installed?
Specially trained DogWatch® technicians will coordinate with you to schedule a convenient time to meet. Before we install anything, our technicians will get a better understanding about you and your dog’s individual needs. We’ll ask you questions about what your ideal pet containment looks like—most importantly where you want to keep your pet contained whether it’s the front, back, or keeping them out of specific areas like your garden—and we’ll be sure to address any concerns you have.
Once we’ve provided a customized plan made with your specific property layout in mind, it’s time for us to install the fence. We’ll discreetly bury the non-electrified boundary wire and strategically place a signal transmitter in an out-of-sight area such as a garage or basement. Finally, after completing assembly and installation, we will thoroughly test everything is working properly.
Types of Hidden Fence Configuration:
Every customer is given a customized plan that works specifically for your pet containment goals and your yard but there are four typical systems that are usually used.
- Basic Perimeter: In this standard approach, we install wiring along your entire property line to make sure that all of it is available for your pet’s enjoyment. Plus, if there are certain areas such as gardens or pools where you don’t want them playing in, no worries! Simply add various garden, pool, or flower bed loops within the prohibited zones for total peace of mind.
- Hourglass (Pinch): By installing the fence wire up against the house on both sides of your property, this configuration creates two separate zones for your pet. You will be able to manage when and where your pet is allowed to roam, whether it be in the front or backyard.
- Backyard Only: This option restricts your pet’s access to only the backyard. The hidden fence wire would be installed near the front of the house to keep pets from escaping through the front door or garage. This same arrangement could potentially be reversed so that it only limits entry into the front yard too.
- Banana Loop: This approach provides you with an invisible fence boundary along one, two, or three sides of your property. This option is ideal for those who already have some traditional fencing but want their front yard to remain safe while also maximizing the available space in the backyard.
How Does the Hidden Pet Fence Work?
When your pet gets too close to the hidden barrier, they are alerted with a slight stimulation—similar to a static shock, it’s enough to grab their attention without causing harm. It’s a quick reminder to make sure they understand where they are allowed to roam while remaining safe in every way. The intensity can be adjusted to fit your pet’s size and temperament. Pets quickly learn these boundaries, soon enough you’ll see them confidently exploring within your set limits.
So How Do You Train?
Training your pet to use hidden or “invisible” fences is remarkably easy given how smart our animals tend to be. Here are a few pet training tips that will get your pet adjusted to their new barrier quickly.
Start by establishing flags along the perimeter of your hidden fence to give your pet a visual reminder during training. Once they become more familiar, you can remove these markers. For the first week of training, use a leash and be sure to reward good behavior with treats and petting. As you approach the flags, your pet’s collar will warn them by beeping and vibrating, when this happens, pull him away quickly while saying an avoidance phrase such as “watch out” or “careful” so that it remains ingrained in their memory to stay within boundaries.
Once your dog becomes comfortable, let them wander freely but keep an eye on them. If they get too close to a flagged area, simply use the avoidance phrase you provided before and call them back. The more confident your dog gets, give them longer and unattended outdoor time.
DogWatch® is devoted to ensuring the utmost security for your pet. Our method, which has been applauded by veterinarians and trainers all around the globe, is remarkably safe and effective. When you choose us from initial consultation through installation to ongoing support, we’ll be there every step of the way—making sure that your beloved animal remains safe and content!
